My name is Mavis Davis and I'll be blunt. It’s getting tougher and tougher down here in London. Demolition, luxury flats, big billboards of sexy couples drinking champagne and feeding paninis to their cockapoos
It's the annual meeting of minds and gathering of thoughts for these four landladies from east London, Stoke on Trent, Preston and Hull in this short film created by artist Rebecca Davies.
'The Landlady' brings up UK wide issues of housing justice, community displacement and the destruction of the welfare state. The four women characters were created collaboratively with community groups in each of the cities as part of The Oasis Social Club
TOSC is part entertainment venue, part discussion space, incorporating the long British tradition of Working Men’s Clubs, infused with Davies’ warmth and humour. The club also provides an important arena for debate on more serious issues such as housing justice and diminishing social space as well as quality performance from local and national acts.
Rebecca Davies is an artist working within a participatory practice through illustration, performance and event. Her project The Oasis Social Club toured the UK in 2015 and Mavis Davis represented London as part of the 2015 European Capital of Culture in Mons, Belgium. Rebecca co-directs The People's Bureau, a skills exchange in the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre, London, collaborating with organisations such as the Latin American Workers Association, LCC, Siobhan Davies Dance and Tate Exchange. Rebecca has an MA in Communication Art and Design from RCA in 2010 and is an Artsadmin Associate artist. She runs the community sessions at Whitechapel Gallery and is currently working with artist Anna Francis on the Portland Inn Project in Stoke-on-Trent.
