TERMS & CONDITIONS - THE WORKSHOPS

GROUP WORKSHOPS
Various Dates and Times

A series of FREE workshops which activate Dunhill & O'Brien's workstation installation at AirSpace. Each workshop lasts for 90 minutes, and offers participants the chance to discuss, make and collaborate with fellow workshoppers, with the offer to take away the final piece, or add it to an ever-growing exhibition.

Terms & Conditions is the exhibition by Dunhill & O'Brien taking place at AirSpace Gallery as part of the 2019 British Ceramics Biennial. As part of the exhibition, the artists and associate Melissa Beardsmore are offering several free workshops, so that you can be a part of their exhibition. The workshops are a fun and collaborative clay experience. There are a number of workshop opportunities - please book your place and date below. Here's some info.

Are you a ‘hands-on’ person? Then there are a number of opportunities to take part in experimental clay modelling workshops based on Terms & Conditions during the exhibition period. As well as the chance to get your hands on some clay (!) you can either take the raw clay objects you make away with you or they will be added to the exhibition!
The workshops offer participants a playful and challenging opportunity to model raw clayobjects, translating and interpreting images and actual objects through visual, verbal and tactile communication with others.
One example is where 2 participants work together with one person giving instructions on how to model an object while the other person attempts to model the object in clay – however neither of the participants will be able to actually see the object.

***The workshops are open to all ages, but children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.***
+++Aprons are available, but it is recommended that you wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty.+++

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Dunhill & O’Brien have been working collaboratively since 1998.
They have exhibited in galleries and project spaces in the UK, Ireland, Holland, Italy and Japan, and have participated in residencies including the British School at Rome, Youkobo art Space, Tokyo and the European Ceramic Work Centre’s Hertogenbosch, Holland. Their practice is primarily concerned with questions of authorship, veracity, ‘craftsmanship’ and the status of sculpture, and, reflects, on the, at times, absurd nature of human endeavor and aspiration. Their attempts to devise methods for making sculpture that bypass their individual taste has led them to work with elaborate strategies and performative processes, often involving elements of chance, remote control, repetition, kinetics and at times the involvement of participants. The resulting artworks frequently incorporate by-products of the making process, custom made tools, raw materials, videos, photographs, or a combination of these elements alongside, or instead of, singular sculptural forms.
This new project, TERMS & CONDITONS, enables Dunhill to revisit a location that holds strong memories and associations for him. In 1980, as a solo artist, he made a series of sculptures employing 4 tons of clay with the help of the Gladstone Pottery Museum and Etruria Clay in Stoke on Trent that culminated in his first solo exhibition in London. Dunhill and O’Brien’s new project relates to that earlier endeavor and similarly employs 4 tons of clay and has evolved over the last 18 months following a number of research visits to Stoke on Trent.
