THE PORTLAND INN PROJECT - outdoor exhibition

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Saturday, March 25th 12pm-2pm
Portland Street, S-o-T ST15HZ

The Portland Inn Project, imagined, designed and delivered by artists Anna Francis and Rebecca Davies, continues into 2017 with a series of events, workshops and community activities with the ultimate aim of transforming the currently defunct and disused former public house into a thriving community centre for the residents of Portland Street and the surrounding area. This first event of 2017 sees the installation of an outdoor exhibition of images from the Project's 2016 activities and an informal get together to discuss plans for the year ahead.

The Portland Inn Outdoor Exhibition
Saturday March 25th 12pm-2pm

The Portland Inn Project is a creative arts project in partnership with the Portland Street Community Group, Stoke-on-Trent City Council, Appetite, AirSpace Gallery, My Community Matters and the British ceramics Biennial for the residents of Portland Street and the surrounding area.

The council have offered the disused pub to the community, to be used as a community centre. Drawing on examples of successful, creative community-led development projects from across the UK, the approach is to involve the area's existing and new community to design and deliver the future of this community asset, through an engaging public art programme. The initial project proposed the Portland Inn as an artwork, and future creative community space - and involved developing a usable, temporary space within the currently boarded up pub to deliver a 4-week arts and cultural programme with sports, dance, literacy and cooking amongst many activities - led by artists Francis and Davies - and piloting a range of activities which brought people into the building and the conversation about the future of the site.

Having successfully delivered that first stage of the project, 2017 sees the next step towards permanently securing and renovating the building, and designing a programme of use.

This first fun and family-friendly event in the project's next stage is to build on the activity of last year, so, please join us for this get together and outdoor exhibition of work on the windows of the Portland Inn Pub. There will be refreshments and family friendly activity to get involved in too! The long term plan is to raise funding in order to renovate the pub and turn it into a ceramic workshop, community social space and venue for artists' residencies.

"Your support on the project so far has been brilliant. Thank you! We have all worked hard to get this far, but it is only just the beginning! Let's continue the energy and momentum needed in order to secure this community asset and carry on working together to make this kind of activity happen from a permanent space. Forward, Together!"
- Anna Francis, Rebecca Davies
