BEDFELLOWS

CHLOE COOPER PHOEBE DAVIES JENNY MOORE

12 - 20 July, 2017
AirSpace is excited to host BEDFELLOWS - a hot-blooded research project led by artists Chloe Cooper, Phoebe Davies and Jenny Moore born from the personal, the political, and the professional. It’s about sex. Sex as education. Sex re-education. Currently the project is investigating sexual identities, desire, consent, and feminist porn and asking whether, as artists trained in visual literacy, we might be able to deconstruct the dominant tropes of the image-heavy sexual landscape we’re living in.

Bedfellows is happening all the time but it manifested itself most recently in the form of a four day open access research centre with a programme of workshops, performances and a club night at Tate Modern, London; three research group meetings at The Caged Antelope; a Charismatic Megafauna gig; a series of SEX TALK MTGs at Serpentine Gallery, Tate Britain, Assembly (Portland, USA), Bergen Assembly (Bergen, Norway) and Let’s Mobilize: What is Feminist Pedagogy?, Valand Academy (Gothenburg, Sweden); a lecture at Wimbledon College of Arts; and a radio show at Reactor Halls E15: You can’t win them all, ladies & gentlemen.

For the week, the Gallery will transform into an open access research centre called Clubhouse - built to house a variety of material and digital resources made by sex educators, artists, writers, bloggers, newspapers, filmmakers, activists, students and teachers available for reading, photocopying, discussing, and exploring. The artists will incubate for the week, to reflect and evaluate the project's recent activities, but will open out to host one open weekend where they will welcome the public (and anyone specifically involved in sex, education and performance practices) to engage with the research materials; to challenge their ideas on sex, identity, pornography and desire; to share their personal experiences; to meet new people and to potentially organise to make change.

"Over the next 6 months we want the Bedfellows research project to create a new self-initiated curriculum for sex and relationships in and out of education from feminist, queer, anti-racist, anti-fascist, anti-classist and intersectional perspectives. In a time of post-truth alternative facts monitored by media frenzy, small grassroots meetings are crucial for our well-being as artists. The residency at AirSpace will support the consolidation and documentation of our conversations and activities over the past year, using our Clubhouse open access research centre to re-educate ourselves; to read again, dispute, develop and stew in what’s happened. We need some time. It’s the beginning of us asking - what's next?” - Chloe Cooper, Phoebe Davies and Jenny Moore
